“I am both honored and excited to share my first season with you as Artistic Director of Portland Baroque Orchestra. From celebratory fanfares to reflections on rebuilding post-war, our programs explore narratives in which old favorites rub shoulders with lesser-known gems. Least known will be the US premiere of an opera pasticcio that I recently devised with librettist Stephen Pettitt, Dinner with Handel. This weaves together a rich tapestry of Baroque arias that seeks to find an answer to the enigma: who exactly was Handel? In putting this on, we show ourselves as advocates of what I term “Historically Inspired Performance,” in which we interact creatively with the past so that this life-affirming art form speaks to each of us afresh. And who better to do this than PBO!”
