On Deck with Sophie Bergkvist

Sophie Bergkvist is in the midst of her first season with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS), where she plays trumpet with the Concert Orchestra and Symphonic Wind Ensemble. She began playing trumpet at the age of 10 by joining her school band. She enjoyed it so much, that she decided to study under Jim Kvech, and currently with Gerald Webster. Musical honors include selection to the 2023 Oregon All-State Symphonic Band and the 2023 Western International Band Clinic.
Sophie is a senior at Corbett High School. Academically, she has been named a National Merit Finalist and nominated for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. In addition to playing trumpet at school and with MYS, she pole vaults year-round with Willamette Striders Track Club. Sophie is a proud dual American-Swedish citizen, maintaining her ties to Sweden through language studies with the American Swedish Institute. Next fall, Sophie will attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she will major in aerospace engineering, compete in women’s pole vault, and (of course!) continue playing trumpet.
