Portland Youth Philharmonic (PYP), the country’s longest running youth orchestra will celebrate its long-standing holiday tradition with the 63rd annual Concert-at-Christmas: Out of This World on Thursday, December 26, 2024, at 7:30 PM at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. This much-loved annual concert showcases all PYP’s ensembles: an Alumni Orchestra, Portland Youth String Ensemble (PYSE), Portland Youth Wind Ensemble (PYWE), Portland Youth Conservatory Orchestra (PYCO), and the flagship Portland Youth Philharmonic. Under the direction of distinguished conductors David Hattner, Inés Voglar Belgique, Giancarlo Castro D’Addona, and Lawrence Johnson, audiences will be treated to an evening of classical masterworks, beloved film scores, and festive favorites.

This year’s concert theme, Out of This World, reflects the sense of wonder and discovery conveyed by the music selections. From cinematic classics to orchestral staples, audiences of all ages will be inspired by the talent and dedication of Portland’s finest young musicians. “We will feature compositions that are old, ones that are new as well as old ones that are new to us and to Portland,” said Musical Director David Hattner.

Audiences will be transported by the sweeping majesty of John Williams’ Flying Theme from E.T. (The Extra Terrestrial) and the adventurous spirit of his Music from Jurassic Park. Michael Giacchino’s vibrant Main Theme from The Incredibles will bring energy and excitement to the stage, reminding us of the heroics and heart of Pixar’s iconic family of superheroes. These cinematic treasures, performed by Portland’s most talented young musicians, promise to evoke nostalgia and wonder, providing a perfect blend of epic storytelling and musical excellence.
