Cappella Romana; Thomas Otten

February 8, 2024: Host Christa Wessel welcomes Cappella Romana and pianist Thomas Otten to the Roger O. Doyle performance studio.

Cappella Romana will preview their upcoming Black Voices concert, featuring African American composers, poets, and hymnographers. Enjoy singers from Cappella Romana and the Kingdom Sound Gospel Choir, performing Orthodox hymns based on African American spirituals, Black Gospel, and more.

Plus, Thomas Otten will share music by American composer Leslie Adams.


ABOUT

Cappella Romana is a professional vocal ensemble that performs early and contemporary sacred classical music in the Christian traditions of East and West. The ensemble is known especially for its presentations and recordings of medieval Byzantine chant (the Eastern sibling of Gregorian chant), Greek and Russian Orthodox choral works, and other sacred music that expresses the historic traditions of a unified Christian inheritance.

Thomas Otten holds the title of Emeritus Professor, having retired in 2018 as Piano Area Chair from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He now resides in Portland, OR, where he is establishing himself as a master teacher and concert artist, touring the Pacific Northwest through the auspices of the OMTA Tholen Enrichment Project and WSMTA Visiting Artist Program. A California native born of German-American parents, Dr. Otten has been hailed by the New York Times as “an extremely original player who puts a formidable technique at the service of his ideas.”
