Martinů Quartet & Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner
November 10, 2022: Guest host Brandi Parisi welcomes the Martinů Quartet and pianist Llewellyn Sanchez-Werner to the Roger O. Doyle performance studio. The Martinů Quartet will share a special preview of their upcoming concerts with Friends of Chamber Music, and Llewellyn will perform selections from his upcoming shows with the Portland Youth Philharmonic.
ABOUT
The Martinů Quartet was formed in 1976 by then students of the Prague Conservatoire, inspired by such string quartets as the Vlach and the Smetana. They went on to win at important international competitions such as the ARD Munich (Germany), Evian (France), Yehudi Menuhin (Portsmouth, Britain) and The Prague Spring competitions. This recognition proved to be just the beginning of the Quartet’s brilliant international career, placing it firmly in the internationally respected Czech string quartet tradition. Breathtaking musicality and rounded, flawless teamwork are hallmarks of the Martinu Quartet.

Founded in1924 by a group of visionary citizens, the Portland Youth Philharmonic Association (or PYP for short) builds on the pioneering work of Mary V. Dodge, whose Irvington School Orchestra was the nucleus of the first Portland Junior Symphony, with Russian émigré Jacques Gershkovitch as its first conductor. PYP is the oldest youth orchestra in the United States. The structure and standards that it established for training young musicians in the 1920s became the prototype for youth orchestras across the country.
