On Deck with Maia Hoffman

At just 17, Maia Hoffman already has an impressive list of accomplishments to her name: she is co-principal of the viola section in the Portland Youth Philharmonic, and this summer she won the honor of attending the prestigious Heifetz International Music Institute. She was also accepted into this summer’s Viola Institute at Interlochen.
Over the course of this episode of On Deck, as we come to know Maia, we’ll learn that despite these triumphs, this has been a tough year for her – Maia’s mom, Catherine Whelan –a Suzuki string teacher in Portland—is fighting ovarian cancer.
To help raise the funds that Maia needs to attend those two summer institutes, on June 1st she will be playing a benefit recital at the Old Church in Portland
