In this episode of On Deck we travel to the far reaches of Northeastern Oregon to visit a summer camp in the woods.

Woodwinds @ Wallowa Lake brings world-class faculty –-many of whom are members of the Oregon Symphony— to kids who otherwise wouldn’t have access to high level musical instruction.

Carin Miller Packwood, principal bassoonist of the Oregon Symphony, coaches a woodwind quintet

Half of the 85 kids who attend Woodwinds @ Wallowa Lake each summer come from rural communities like LaGrande, Ontario, John Day, Boardman, Milton-Freewater and Walla Walla. The other half travel over 6 hours –from the valley or the coast— to study with the renowned faculty artists.
